Armacell GmbHArmaflex products receive CE mark Armacell is the first manufacturer of flexible pipe insulation to gain CE certification
Münster (Germany), 9 January 2012 - Armacell is the first manufacturer of technical insulation materials to provide CE-certified products. The Armacell plant in Münster, the company's largest production facilities worldwide, was successfully certified in November. The CE mark is an expression and visible indication of the Armaflex products' compliance with the Construction Products Directive. The majority of the Armaflex products achieve the class B/BL-s3, d0 in the European fire test and are thus classified as having low flammability.
European product standards for technical insulation materials From August 2012, only technical insulation products which comply with the European product standards and bear the CE mark may be sold in Europe. A mandatory framework will then apply for the key product features of technical insulation materials - such as thermal conductivity, resistance to water vapour transmission, fire behaviour, tolerances etc. The transparency achieved will allow specifiers, distributors and installers to make a quick and direct comparison between the products on offer. The European product standards provide greater legal certainty in the specification and installation of technical insulation materials and the CE mark will have a positive impact on pan-European trade.
European fire classification One important change is that the national fire classifications which have applied so far, such as the German B1 and B2 fire classes or the Spanish M1, will be replaced by standardized European fire classes. The new classification uses the seven fire classes A to F which are already valid for other construction products. For pipe insulation a subscripted ‘L' (for ‘linear products') will be added. Another new feature is the information on smoke development and burning droplets, which will be marked with ‘s' and ‘d' respectively. In the European fire test, the majority of the Armaflex products achieve the class B/BL-s3 d0, the best possible fire class for elastomeric insulation materials.
First technical insulation materials with CE mark As the first manufacturer of technical insulation materials on the basis of synthetic rubber Armacell now already provides CE-certified products. The insulation plant in Münster, the largest Armaflex production facilities worldwide, was successfully certified at the beginning of November; further European factories are currently undergoing the conformity assessment procedure. The CE mark and the product designation code, which provides information on the key product properties, can be found on the product cartons.
Armacell and its predecessor Armstrong Insulation Products played a significant role in the European work on standardization for technical insulation materials and were one of the parties steering the process from the mid eighties. As the developer of Armaflex, the first flexible pipe insulation made of elastomeric foam (FEF), the company founded a completely new branch of industry in the mid fifties. Armacell is therefore particularly committed to shaping the process of European harmonization in this sector of industry responsibly.
Armacell is a manufacturer of engineered foams and the world leader in the market for flexible technical insulation materials. In the financial year 2010, the company had a gross annual turnover of around 427 million euros. The group of companies has approximately 2,500 employees and 18 factories in 12 countries. It is headquartered in Münster, Germany. Apart from ARMAFLEX, the leading brand in the field of flexible technical insulation, the company also produces thermoplastic insulation materials, covering systems, fire protection and noise control products, special foams for a multitude of industrial applications and foam cores which are used as composite materials. Further information on the company can be found at www.armacell.com.

Armacell GmbHConsiderable energy savings through optimal insulation of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems
Armacell study: Higher level of insulation in cold applications pays off
Münster, 24 November 2011 - It is by now common knowledge that considerable energy savings can be achieved through optimized insulation. However, the first thing which comes to most people's minds is the insulation of the building, rather than that of the HVACR systems. Yet investments in the insulation of the building service equipment pay off much faster. This is not only the case for heating technology, but also - as Armacell has now proved - for refrigeration and air-conditioning technology. In Germany today, 14 % of the total energy consumption is accounted for by refrigeration and air-conditioning plant (source: ASERCOM). So measures to increase the energy efficiency in this field of application have great environmental potential which should not be neglected.
Today, the insulation of cold pipes is mainly aimed at preventing condensation. Therefore, it is common practice to determine insulation thicknesses solely from the perspective of condensation control. As a rule, insulation thicknesses of 6 to at most 13 mm are used, which prevent condensation, but are not optimally designed to reduce energy losses. As the results of a recent study carried out by Armacell show, substantial energy and CO2 savings are possible when greater insulation thicknesses are used. The objective of the study was to find an optimal, thus also cost-effective insulation thickness for various types of plant. For this purpose, Armacell determined the savings which are achieved through higher levels of insulation (AF-2 to AF-6) - i.e. insulation thicknesses which go beyond condensation control insulation (usually AF-1). These savings were then compared with the investment costs. The subject of the investigation were variously-complex building air-conditioning systems with different cooling demands and typical refrigeration systems which are used in supermarkets for storing and selling foodstuffs.
Costs for optimal insulation thicknesses are recovered Irrespective of the complexity of the system and the cooling demand, an optimal insulation thickness of 15.5 to 25.0 mm (AF/Armaflex AF-4) was determined for chilled-water pipes. The higher investment for the thicker layer of insulation pays for itself in the course of the service life, allowing considerable financial savings after a few years. For the refrigerant pipes of refrigeration systems an even higher level of insulation pays off. For these pipes Armacell recommends AF/Armaflex AF-6 (32 to 50 mm) as the optimal insulation thickness. The higher investment costs have been recovered after just 7 to 9 months!
Considerable potential for CO2 savings The results are also remarkable from an environmental point of view. CO2 emissions from the systems investigated can be reduced by several tonnes annually just by insulating the pipes optimally. These findings allow generalizations about the environmental performance of the insulation material: per installed cubic metre of AF/Armaflex, the use of optimal insulation thicknesses allows annual CO2 savings of
The study has shown clearly that in refrigeration and air-conditioning applications too, considerable potential for savings can be achieved through optimal insulation. Moreover, the investigation did not deal with spectacular individual cases, but typical systems. In future, the objective when insulating pipes in cold applications should be not only condensation control, but also primarily energy saving, for both ecological and economic reasons.

Armacell GmbHArma-Chek Silver: The cost-effective 2-in-1 system solution from Armacell Pre-fabricated elbows and T-pieces; surface with enhanced tear and impact resistance
Münster, 22 November 2010 - The use of pre-covered insulation systems allows considerable time and cost savings. With the new Arma-Chek Silver made by Armacell, installation is now even easier and faster. The system not only provides a reliable insulation material and aesthetic covering in one product, pre-fabricated elbows and T-pieces have also been added to the range. Moreover, the UV-resistance of the covering material has been further enhanced. Arma-Chek Silver is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
New additions to the range are the factory-made elbows and T-pieces. Fabricating complex shaped pieces is a particularly time-consuming process which is not usually carried out on the building site, but in the workshop. An important advantage of the new elbows and T-pieces is that they are connected directly to the adjoining insulation. Unlike in the case of metal claddings, where water can soon penetrate the insulation system around seams, Arma-Chek Silver protects the underlying insulation against moisture ingress even in these areas. On request, Arma-Chek Silver can also be supplied on other Armaflex substrates. The covering material is also available separately on rolls for retrofitting on existing insulation. ArmacellArmacell raises the prices for technical insulation materials and coverings Escalating raw materials costs force Armacell to mark up prices
Muenster (Germany), 5 May 2011. - The dramatic development in raw materials prices has forced Armacell to implement a further price increase. The prices for Armacell insulation materials and coverings will go up by between 7.5 and 10 percent in the short term.
Over the past months, massive price increases on the raw materials market have led to a sharp rise in production costs in the plastics industry. Since September of last year, Armacell again has had to accept numerous price increases for its basic raw materials. In this period, nitrile rubber (NBR), the base material for the majority of Armaflex products, has become 15 percent more expensive, the price of polyethylene (PE) has risen by 20 percent. In the case of flame retardants the price development has been even more dramatic with increases of between 170 and 300 percent. These significant rises in raw materials prices were not driven by material speculation, but are related to the continuing strong global demand in the plastics and rubber market and increases due to feedstock chemicals from oil. Due to the short supply of plastics worldwide at present, demand will climb further in the coming months.
"At the end of last year, we were not able to predict the full extent of these exorbitant increases in the prices of our basic raw materials. We are currently experiencing the most dramatic rise in raw materials prices ever to hit our industry. Because of continued high demand, the current development of raw material price increases is expected to continue and prices are not anticipated to level off in the foreseeable future. Therefore, we are obliged to pass on at least part of our drastically increased material costs to our customers. Of course, we are at the same time making every effort to reduce our overall costs through further savings and optimizations," commented Dr. Ulrich Wellen, COO of Armacell International, on the current price increases. ‘In spite of rising materials costs we will continue to invest in the quality and further development of our products. In this manner we will assure, in the interests of our customers, our technological leadership and sustainable growth."

Wolf GmbHOOO Wolf Energiesparsysteme: Wolf sets up subsidiary in Russia
Wolf GmbH is further intensifying its activities on the Russian market. At the start of the year, the company from Mainburg (Bavaria) successfully completed the establishment of its own subsidiary in Russia, i.e. "OOO Wolf Energiesparsysteme", whose head office is located in Moscow. The company has already been officially entered in the Russian Commercial Register. "OOO" stands for "Obschtschestvo s Ogranitschennoj Otwetstwennostju" and is the abbreviation for a Russian limited liability company, comparable with a German GmbH. Wolf has been selling its products in Russia since 1999 and has maintained representative offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg since 2007.
"OOO Wolf Energiesparsysteme" currently has a workforce of nine employees at the sites in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Krasnodar. The Managing Director is Alexej Pinin. The company will primarily be responsible for handling the heating business and will concentrate on sales, customer services, technical support and training. A separate training centre will be set up in this respect.
"Through the establishment of this subsidiary, we have taken another important step towards the successful expansion of Wolf GmbH on the Russian market," said Bernhard Steppe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Wolf. "We can look forward to excellent future prospects as a result of the anticipated relaxation of bureaucratic obstacles in international trade," added Rudolf Meindl, Director of Controlling.
Wolf GmbH currently operates in 57 countries around the globe, has a worldwide workforce of around 1,700 employees and recorded a turnover of approximately €300 million in 2010. The system specialist for heating, air conditioning, ventilation, solar systems and combined heat and power plants identified Russia some time ago as one of the most important international future markets and has continually extended its involvement in that country ever since.
The Central Russian region of Yaroslawl is one of the main areas where Wolf is closely involved. There just under two years ago, the company started operating the first CHP plant in the entire region - a plant with electrical and thermal power of 195 kW and 216 kW respectively. A production facility for CHP plants for the Russian market is also being constructed in Yaroslawl. These plants contain motors from Jaroslawl Motorenwerke (JMZ) which are being converted to gas operation and are equipped with Wolf regulation and hydraulic technology. Together with the regional government in Yaroslawl and Yaroslawl Technical University, Wolf has also founded an "Engineering Centre for Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection". Wolf has also long acted as a cooperation partner for Russian companies in the development, production and assembly of energy conservation systems. For example, the 280 employees at Wolf-Energy-Solution in Safonovo (Smolensk Oblast) produce large boilers up to 58 MW under licence. Armacell at the Chillventa 2010 (Hall 2, Stand 207)AF/Armaflex from Armacell: Now equipped with Microban® antimicrobial product protection
Highly flexible low-temperature insulation material for an added level of protection against bacteria, mould and mildew
Münster, 12 August 2010 - Armacell's premium product AF/Armaflex is now equipped with antimicrobial protection. As an exclusive partner of Microban, Armacell is the first manufacturer to present a highly flexible insulation material which provides additional protection against harmful bacteria, mould and mildew. There are no additional costs associated with the increased performance of the product, which is available on the market since April. The launch will be accompanied by an extension of the product range. For example, AF/Armaflex tubes are now also available for plastic pipes in the diameters commonly used in cold applications.
Health hazards due to air pollutants in buildings As a recent study by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has shown, the air inside buildings can be up to ten times more contaminated with air-borne pollutants than the air outside. Excess moisture in combination with dust and dirt particles provides an ideal breeding ground for microbial growth. The microbes themselves then release spores, cells, particles and volatile organic compounds (VOC) and thus may contribute to sick building syndrome. The most frequent consequences of poor indoor air quality (IAQ) are an increase in respiratory, allergic and asthmatic illnesses and disturbances of the immune system.
Active antimicrobial protection provides added security Suitable building materials can prevent dirt accumulation, moisture penetration and thus mould growth. As they are dust- and fibre-free materials, Armaflex products already have passive protection against micro-organisms. It is much more difficult for germs to settle on the smooth, non-porous surface of the elastomeric material and they do not find the nutrients they need to grow. The closed-microcell structure and high resistance to water vapour transmission, provide Armaflex insulations with reliable protection against moisture ingress. In addition, the new AF/Armaflex now has active protection against bacteria, mould and mildew. Antimicrobially-active additives from Microban are built into the AF/Armaflex products during the manufacturing process. These additives penetrate the cell walls of the microbes and disable important cell functions. As a result the micro-organism is unable to function and can no longer grow or multiply. The Microban® technology prevents bacteria, mould and mildew settling on the insulation throughout its service life. AF/Armaflex is, therefore, especially suitable for use in public buildings, health care facilities, schools and nurseries but also in process industries such as the food, beverage or pharmaceutical industries.
Already successfully launched in the USA, UK and India Armacell has an exclusive, worldwide licensing agreement with Microban International Ltd, the global leader in built-in antimicrobial product protection. Armaflex products with Microban® antimicrobial protection are already very successful in the USA, India, Great Britain and Ireland. AF/Armaflex has been tested in accordance with ASTM G21 and ASTM 1338 and also complies with the requirements of the German VDI 6022 (hygienic standards for ventilation and air-conditioning systems).
Armacell is a manufacturer of engineered foams and the world leader in the market for flexible technical insulation materials. In the financial year 2009, the company had an annual turnover of around 400 million euros. The group of companies has approximately 2,300 employees and 18 factories in 12 countries. It is headquartered in Münster, Germany. This makes this series particularly economical of energy, environmentally friendly and ready for immediate use. Thanks to their suction gas cooling, the OCTAGON VARISPEED models are maintenance-free and safe to operate even at high ambient temperatures. Other advantages are the optimal allocation of compressor and ready-configured frequency inverter, a wide speed range and reduced starting current. BITZER also plans to introduce VARISPEED versions of the BITZER ECOLINE series and of the transcritical OCTAGON CO2 reciprocating compressors.
Also at Chillventa, BITZER will exhibit further developments of its subcritical CO2 reciprocating compressors for use where natural refrigerants are a priority. These models impress with their extended application range plus their natural environmental friendliness and significantly increased energy efficiency. Higher operating pressures are permissible with the new compressors, further simplifying system operation for the customer. The subcritical CO2 reciprocating compressors are the first choice for use in supermarket systems in particular. Used in combination with the BITZER ECOLINE series, a tried and tested hybrid system for medium and low-temperature applications results. The BITZER ECOLINE series is based on R134a, has a very low global warming potential (GWP) and is thus particularly eco-efficient.
BITZER has extended its ECOSTAR series with two new models and now offers a total of five types of this successful condensing unit. The new models with OCTAGON VARISPEED compressors allow extended capacity of up to about 26 kW under normal conditions and feature infinite capacity control and pre-programmed control. They will also be fitted with a still more effective heat exchanger (microchannel). In future all BITZER ECOSTAR models will have, together with their familiar software features, an improved display with further optimized user guidance and an Ethernet connection for remote monitoring.
In the area of screw compressors BITZER offers its customers yet more energy efficiency with the CSH.3 series, particularly under part load operation. The new CSH.3 series is specially designed for use in air cooled chillers and in industrial heat pumps. No changes have been made to the dimensions or connecting positions in relation to the previous series, making replacement problem-free. The economizer mode of the CSH.3 series allows still higher energy efficiency; it can be used in full and part load operation.
For air conditioning and use in heat pumps, BITZER has developed the ORBIT 8 scroll compressor series. This is optimized for R410A and thus achieves up to 15 per cent improved year-round efficiency, particularly during part load operation. The ORBIT 8 Standard is designed for higher condensing temperatures in air-cooled systems. Unique in the entire industry is the ORBIT 8 Boreal. Optimized for low condensing temperatures, for example in water-cooled systems, this model achieves high energy efficiency in this area. Both versions are also available as tandem or trio applications, offering the user ready-made parallel compounding with a higher total capacity.
¡
The BITZER group of companies is the world's largest independent manufacturer of refrigerant compressors. BITZER is globally represented with sales companies and production sites for reciprocating, screw and scroll compressors as well as pressure vessels. In 2009, some 2,500 employees generated consolidated sales of about EUR 400 million.
Bock Kältemaschinen GmbH, hall 4, stand 316,Responsible refrigeration technology at the Chillventa Trade-fair preview Bock Kältemaschinen GmbH
Under the slogan "responsible refrigeration" Bock presents at the Chillventa 2010 compressor solutions for environmentally friendly refrigeration- and air-conditioning systems.
One of the biggest challenges of our time is to counteract climate change. In particular, the emission of carbon dioxide CO2 and other climate-changing greenhouse-gases has to be reduced.
An important role plays refrigeration- and air-conditioning technology. The technical production of refrigeration in Germany adds up to about 14% of the total energy consumption. An impressive number that makes clear that the refrigeration- and air-conditioning technology might be one of the biggest energy consumers, but also has a big energy-saving potential.
Therefore it is obvious that especially in the refrigeration- and air-conditioning industry there is a lot of discussion about future technologies to find possible saving potential.
From 13.-15 October, Bock presents at the Chillventa 2010 in Nuremberg its current solutions for economic and environmentally friendly refrigeration- and air-conditioning systems.
The natural solution CO2
In the last few years, the refrigerant CO2 was established in various applications, such as parts of the supermarket sector. A development that will even gain momentum in the next years. With ten years of experience as a pioneer of this technology, Bock presents for the first time at the Chillventa the new 4-cylinder compressor models HG44 CO2T for the use in transcritical CO2 applications.
Full commitment for highest efficiency
When it comes to the topic of efficiency good is not good. Therefore Bock works continuously on the development of our current compressors.
The result - compressors especially optimised for the use with 134a. Those compressors optimised for the specific characteristics of R134a achieve a higher efficiency and therefore increase the annual capacity of the refrigeration plant. As the first compressors in R134a version, Bock presents at the Chillventa 2010 models of the type HG5...R134a.
With the Bock e-series the company also presents a further development in terms of efficiency optimisation. The new generation of semi-hermetic compressors is optimized for all standard refigerants. As a first model of this series, Bock presents at the Chillventa compressors of the type HG34.
Awarded solution - energy saving with the EFC-system
An essential element of the efficient operation of refrigerating plants is a regulation that is conform to the respective demands. In many cases such a regulation of the compressor via a frequency converter accounts for a saving potential of 25% and more.
Through a continuous variable speed control of the compressor, the frequency converter ensures the automatic adaptation of the produced refrigeration capacity to the actual demand. Already since 2004, Bock offers with the EFC-system (Electronic Frequency Control) the Plug & Play solution for the frequency-converter regulation of compressors.
At the Chillventa, Bock presents the EFC Plug & Play system that was awarded with an innovation price for refrigeration technology by the German Environmental Minister.
A natural alternative - hydrocarbons
Whereas the use of synthetic refrigerants is already limited in some countries due to their contribution to the greenhouse effect, the trend goes towards natural refrigerants that are a real alternative to synthetic refrigerants. A well-known solution among them - hydrocarbons.
Based on the compressors of the current Bock semi-hermetic program and the established standard product range, Bock presents at the Chillventa a compressor version especially for the use with hydrocarbons - the so-called HC-compressors. Those compressors are suitable for all hydrocarbons and have, compared to compressors for standard FKW- and HFKW-refrigerants, safety-related modifications due to the flammability of hydrocarbons.
The refrigeration- and air-conditioning industry is responsible for future generations. With the Bock compressor program at the Chillventa 2010, the company presents practically oriented solutions that are already available today to build environmentally friendly refrigeration plants. In hall 4, stand 316, the company is looking forward to your visit.

Our BD35K compressor offers an outstanding reliable and efficient cooling solution powered by the sun.
BD35K - cooling with renewable energy With the BD Solar compressor Danfoss offers a refrigeration solution in places with no or poor power supply. Due to the exceptionally low starting current batteries can be avoided if an ice bank is used for energy storage. The BD Solar compressor is solar-powered. The unique feature is that the sun energy can be stored in ice packs. During the night and when there is no sun the ice packs keep the cabinet at desired temperatures. The BD Solar compressor opens numerous uses for the manufacturers within the rapidly growing area of stationary refrigeration under difficult conditions without power supply, e.g. storage of food or drugs, ice cream stands in holiday resorts, remote bottle coolers to name but a few. The BD compressor can be connected to a solar panel without the use of any additional electronics. Its wide voltage range (10-45 V DC) makes the BD very suitable for photovoltaic powering. An example on the latter was displayed at an UN Johannesburg Summit. At this occasion Danfoss Compressors supplied the compressor for a solar cabinet, complying with the tough demands of UNESCO (storage for 5 days without power supply). - BD350GH with 48 V DC

With electricity costs amounting to almost 75% of the total running costs of a supermarket, the ability to control the refrigeration system's performance can have a direct affect on the bottom line.
Danfoss and Cross Refrigeration in Ireland teamed up and reduced a typical C-Store supermarket's energy consumption by more than 10 per cent.
The Centra supermarket in Rathdangan, County Kildare, Ireland is a typical small store (approx 500m2) that supplies a variety of grocery products to the local community. While independently owned, the store operates under the franchise banner of the Musgraves Group.
Cross Refrigeration therefore contacted long time partner, Danfoss, who has a long history of providing systems and solutions that reduce the energy consumption of refrigeration applications. With the storeowner's permission the two companies joined forces to evaluate the potential savings in more detail. Together the companies drew up a plan to optimise the store's refrigeration system and ancillary facilities.
The solution
From the review, Danfoss and Cross Refrigeration engineers fitted a variety of Danfoss ADAP-KOOL® controllers in the store's display cases and cold rooms, and linked them with other Danfoss AK controllers already applied. At the same time, they installed the new dedicated AK-CS small store system manager and power meters to supervise and monitor the power consumption.
This setup successfully connected the many different display cases, cold rooms, units and compressors, which until then all operated independently from each other. With the AK-CS functioning as the front end system manager, it was then possible to control and monitor night setback, lighting schedules on cases, fan cycling, thermostat modulation and defrost scheduling.
Instant efficiency boost
The system conversion was relatively easy to install, and after a total of 12 weeks of before and after test running, Cross and Danfoss reviewed and evaluated the comparative results.
"First, we measured the energy consumption over a six week period without optimising the performance of the store' system. Then we used the basic features of the ADAP-KOOL® platform through the AK-CS controller to optimise the system's settings,"
says ADAP-KOOL® Projects Engineer, Shane Fleming from Danfoss Ireland.
The logging system used to monitor performance was accessible remotely through the built-in WEB server in the AK-CS system and a wireless 3G router, which added installation flexibility compared to a fixed broadband line.
This allowed for full temperature overview, alarm monitoring and response, remote repair/fix as or if needed, and data download of the system's performance.
After a further six weeks running, the results spoke for themselves, as the store's energy consumption had dropped by 11%, translating to approximately 8,000KWH a year, or reducing energy costs by approximately €1,200 annually.
Furthermore, the logging capabilities of the
AK-CS system also satisfy the store's HACCP requirements, giving live status overview and saving valuable time by automatically compiling compliance documentation.
According to Shane Fleming this is merely the tip of the iceberg.
"Due to the fact that this was a retrofit into an existing system, the setup did not allow for full control of compressor operation, where most energy is consumed.
The leading supplier of refrigeration solutions is introducing its new generation of ADAP-KOOL® injection systems for CO2 evaporators. The new Danfoss injection system makes it easier to design and commission CO2 systems, thus bringing CO2 faster to the market.
The system consists of:
The system has a number of innovative features that facilitate the use of CO2, and the exploitation of the full potential of the refrigerant.
One of the CO2 challenges is sudden superheat change, especially in evaporators not fully adapted for CO2. It requires a very fast reaction from the controller. AK-CC 550A electronic controller includes an algorithm for this specific purpose.
Another CO2 challenge is high pressure at standstill position and in some cases high differential pressure over expansion valves for high temperature cases. AKVH valves copes with both tasks. The valves have a MWP of 90 Bar and maximum pressure differential up to 35 Bar! Extremely fast reaction time is another important feature of AKV valves when compared to other expansion technologies.
New Danfoss injection makes it easier to design and commission CO2 systems, thus bringing CO2 faster to the market.

It is necessary to use an electronic oil management system as traditional float-based oil management systems are not suitable due to the pressure rating. Danfoss has overcome the problem by integrating oil management functionality in to the standard pack controllers AK-PC 740 and 780. These pack controllers can manage 5 different preset configurations of typical oil management systems, along with all advanced features of the standard Danfoss pack controller.
The new CO2 pack controller has the following features:
Explore the new CO2 pack controllers at www.danfoss.com/FoodRetail or at the Chillventa exhibition in Hall 4.
The new SG+ sight glass from Danfoss marks an important step in meeting the demands of the future. Completely rust-free and virtually impervious to corrosion due to the use of stainless steel as the basic material the new sight glass range is more durable and reliable than ever.
The entire SG+ sight glass range has been upgraded to 46 bar to meet the requirements for R410A. All measurements are unchanged, meaning that replacement and service is easy.

The new range of WEH TW111 compact series for refrigerant
filling with two new options is now smaller and more compactThe WEH TW111 refrigerant filling connectors, with their distinctive blue and red colouring, have been a longstanding proven tool for servicing refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
The TW111 has now been further developed to be smaller and more compact and therefore easier to handle in tight spaces where access is restricted. The new versions have an outer diameter of only 25 mm. In addition to the existing model with a central media inlet, WEH have developed two new models with a 90° media inlet. The sales launch of the new TW111 series will be November 1st, 2010.
By cutting the loss of refrigerant on disconnection by more than 99 % the WEH TW111 connectors are truly environmentally friendly. So compared to traditional hand tightened connectors you save money as well as valuable time. Repetitive Strain Injuries are eliminated - just place the connector onto the receptacle, push the grip sleeve forward and start filling - it doesn't get any easier!
The new connector series retains the same outstanding properties as before: integrated shut-off valve, standard 1/4" SAE connection, red or blue coloured grip sleeve for high or low pressure. The integrated shut-off valve prevents the escape of refrigerant which remains in the filling tube for correct disposal later.

New Solkaneâ Specialties: Solvay Fluor Expands Its Product Range for Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems
The Solkaneâ product family has grown: Solvay Fluor has added two new fluorine specialties, Solkaneâ 22L and Solkaneâ 22M, to its range of refrigerants. At the Chillventa in Nuremberg Solvay will be presenting the new products and their possible uses.
Solkaneâ 22L was developed for refrigeration systems at low and medium operating temperatures (e.g. in supermarkets), while Solkaneâ 22M is the best refrigerant for air conditioning units with evaporation temperatures above 0°C. Both specialties are environmentally friendly and ‘0-ODP' (Ozone Depletion Potential) alternatives for R22, the use of which has been forbidden as of the beginning of this year according to EU Directive 1005/2009. In addition, Solkaneâ 22L and Solkaneâ 22M are both compatible with almost any common lubricant and can be used as efficient drop-in solutions for existing systems, thus replacing R22. The products were showcased at the Mostra Convegno Expocomfort exhibition in Milan in March; this is the first time they will be presented at a trade fair in Germany.
With the new Solkane types Solvay Fluor puts its focus on specialties, continuing to offer the whole range of refrigerants and propellants in its traditional markets. Under the brand name Solkatherm® Solvay offers a refrigerant that contributes to a more efficient use of the surplus energy emitted into the environment by block-type thermal power stations or industrial facilities through air coolers. With Solkatherm® and ORC technology (Organic Rankine Cycle) residual heat can be used directly to generate electricity. In the process Solkatherm® is evaporated and the resulting pressure is used to drive a turbine attached to a generator.
By extending the range of Solkaneâ refrigerants for different refrigeration applications such as ORC systems, high-temperature heat exchangers and cooling of drives (e.g. in laptops), Solvay Fluor seeks to further expand its leading position in its traditional markets. In the market for fluorides for aluminum brazing and with propellants for polyurethane insulating material Solvay Fluor is among the world market leaders.
Solvay Fluor's stand at the Chillventa will be no. 124 in hall 4.

HKT Huber-Kälte-Technik GmbH - Goeldner-Compressors at Chillventa 2010
Specific applications with Goeldner-Compressors
HKT gives insight on its latest developments and special applications:
In this context the new small 2-stage compressor type HZ 22 3 will be shown. This semi-hermetic, it is supposed to be the smallest two-stage compressor on market, is dedicated to applications in laboratory apparatus and all installations where temperatures from -50°C to -85°C at a small capacity have to be achieved. This compressor can replace and simplify more complicated cascade systems in a simple way.
It is not necessary to mention in detail that energy efficiency is a central concern of HKT. It is already proofed by the introduction of Goeldner-Motion-Compressors, the first refrigeration compressors with on-board frequency inverter on market, in years 2000. This range is developed further on all the time and installed in high sophisticated systems.
As well it is demonstrated with a chiller running with R410A and equipped with a Goeldner-Motion-Compressor with on-board 22kW FI. This chiller can operate at a minimum condensing temperature of +16°C having a COP of above 10. This means under the mentioned conditions 100kW refrigeration capacity can be achieved with only 10kW input power.
In the last 10 years the 2-cylinder Goeldner-Motion-Compressors with their inimitable lubrication system have proved that the wide range of revolutions from 20Hz to 70Hz (28...100%) can be driven with a reciprocation semi-hermetic compressor without any lubrication problems. Exactly this efficient lubrication system was transmitted to the 4-cylinder range compressors. The new type HS 34 will have its premiere. With it oil pump is needed no more.
The advantages, of these compressors being predestinated for operating with frequency inverters, are:
But there are not only innovations at the compressor side also at the components used from HKT there are news.
For the first time the new generation of frequency inverter type 8400 Motec, the enhancement of the 8200 Motec, will be shown. This new generation will be built on Goeldner-Motion-Compressors, beginning with type HS 12 1..3FU, from early 2011 on.
The main advantages of the constellation are:
At manufacturing components and at plant engineering you have to keep an eyes on the master plan. This as well HKT has made to its virtue. Based on this, HKT as the only supplier, equips its air-cooled condensing units, fan size 350mm, with EC-fans and right sized controllers. The whole thing without nameable additional costs for the customer.
Beside the above mentioned, several compressors, parallel units and condensing units will be presented with Goeldner-Motion-Compressors. With that units, based on the Goeldner construction set system, it will be possible to get tailor made, energy efficient solutions for nearly every special application.
Not to forget the natural refrigerants for which HKT agitated since ever. To facilitate its customers work a bit more, based on the experience in handling the natural refrigerants propane R290, ammonia R717 and ammonia dimethylether R723, HKT also supplies client-specific manufactured chillers and heat pumps.
With it the installer gets complete solutions in his hands even for this field of application.
HKT Huber-Kälte-Technik GmbH always stays open for new ideas and suggestions.
Talk to us. We look forward on your visit in hall 4A on our stand no 317.
The focus on this year's CHILLVENTA presentation is our new generation of FrigoPack Intelligent Refrigeration Inverters.
The FrigoPack series make modern control of compressor racks small and large possible. The new FrigoSoft cooling software "inside" covers many different applications: Refrigeration, aircon, heat pumps, reverse-cycle aircon/heat pumps, operation with external supermarket controllers or control of fans on condensers and dry coolers.
CEC (Compressor Envelope Control) FrigoPack keeps the compressor always within its safe operating area and monitors suction pressure, condensing pressure and suction gas temperature.
Automatic adaptation of the compressor speed range is achieved by AFC (Automatic Frequency Control) - best possible rack performance can be achieved (stable suction pressure, less stop-starts, improved low-capacity performance) resulting in considerable energy savings and an increased compressor life time.
Automatic Compressor Motor Fluxing (ACMF) provides automatic optimization of motor magnetic fluxing parameters and optimizes the motor power factor. Highest possible COP/efficiency with inverter control result Integration in external supervising systems using RS485 with Modbus RTU / RS232 will be demonstrated on our Stand 406 in Hall 4. DIXELL X-WEB and ENERSYS webservers for remote access and will be on show.
We look forward to meeting you on our stand.

"Green" fans are in demand
With the ErP Directive going into effect for motors and fans, manufacturers are required to design their products for the European market in accordance with the defined efficiency requirements and thereby make an important contribution to energy savings. At the international Chillventa trade fair from 13-15 October 2010 in Nuremberg, Germany, ebm-papst is presenting the latest products and solutions for refrigeration, air-conditioning, and heat pump technology, which already clearly surpass the required limit values in terms of their efficiency.
The HyBlade axial fans for refrigeration system components, such as evaporators and condensers, will be exhibited in Hall 7, Stand 7-416. The HyBlade series has been expanded to include sizes 300, 350, 400 and 450. With an energy savings of up to 50% and improved noise behaviour, they are the ideal solution for use in refrigeration technology.
In the field of air/air and air/water heat pumps, the HyBladeÒ series is supplemented by the newly-developed "RadiCal" centrifugal fans, both designed with ebm-papst GreenTech EC technology. The innovative impeller geometry and improved motor thermal management of the RadiCal fans make heat pumps even quieter and more efficient in operation.
For refrigerated and freezer cases ebm-papst offers an energy saving fan series in sizes 172 to 300. Conversion of existing shaded-pole motors is made quite easy by the efficient iQ-motors, since they are mechanically compatible, have a high efficiency of up to 65% and enable a simple 1:1 replacement with identical installation dimensions.
Also for other applications in the field of ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration, such as fan coils, floor convectors, control cabinet cooling and HVAC systems, energy saving fans are presented in various designs and sizes which stand out due to their compact dimensions, low-noise operation and high efficiency.

The best connection between safety, ecology and economy
VULKAN Lokring is a division of the VULKAN Group, and has been the world's market leader for permanent solderless tube connection technology for refrigerant lines for more than 30 years.
With the LOKRING system, the company offers absolutely clean, permanent and purely mechanical tube connections with a permanent hermetic seal for all refrigeration and air-conditioning technology requirements, confirmed by a special TÜV test and approval procedure. The patented LOKRING tube connection is not only a reliable and economical method of connecting refrigerant lines, it is environmentally friendly too. Up to now, more than 1 billion so-called single-ring tube connections have been successfully installed by LOKRING in the industrial production of vehicle air-conditioning systems, refrigerators and freezers. In the automotive industry, manufacturers have been relying on the success of solderless technology from VULKAN since the beginning of the 1980s. In this branch in particular, extremely high standards have to be met in terms of air-tightness and reliability, which can only be achieved by a metallic and hermetically sealing tube connection.
VULKAN Lokring has continually applied the expert knowledge gained as an original equipment manufacturer for industry on the development of solderless tube connection technology for installation and service in refrigeration and air-conditioning technology as well. This means VULKAN Lokring can deliver a tube connection system in original equipment quality for almost every installation or service situation.
This LOKRING tube connection technology is based on an axial sliding technology: The two ends of the tubes to be connected are brought together in a connection joint, then two LOKRINGs are pushed axially onto the joint using a hand assembly tool. Due to the conical inner contour of the LOKRINGs, the joint is reduced to such an extent that the tube and the joint create a metallic-hermetic connection through surface pressing. There is no measurable drop in pressure or reduction in volume flows in the tube system, however.
Leading manufacturers in the white goods industry all over the world value the LOKRING system not only for appliance production, but also for repair work. Because the simple hand assembly of the solderless connection means that appliances and systems do not have to be dismantled in a time-consuming and expensive process, they can be repaired directly on site.
The principle of "LOKRINGing rather than soldering" not only means time and money saving, it also means long-term environmental and health protection. During soldering, toxic substances such as phosgene, hydrochloric acid and dioxin are produced through the burning of residue refrigerant or oils, which is extremely harmful both to the environment and fitters' health. In addition, the fire hazard caused by soldering systems with combustible refrigerants is averted. The LOKRING method thus combines environmental and health protection in an economic way.
After the EU Directive 842/2006 came into force with the legal requirement to reduce the use of climate-killing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the LOKRING technology became more and more important in refrigerant and air-conditioning installation technology. If the average leakage rates and the resulting refilling quantities in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems using conventional soldering connections are considered, the ecological contribution and economical effect achieved by using LOKRINGs to reduce the global warming effect caused by leakage quickly becomes clear.
VULKAN Lokring has also recognised the increasing importance of the eco-friendly and alternative refrigerant CO2. Last year, LOKRING developed a tube connection system for a special application for one of the largest supermarket chains in the world that can be used for sub-critical CO2 cooling systems.
CHILLVENTA 2010:
LOKRING presents its innovative leak detection method "LOKtrace"
VULKAN Lokring is presenting its innovative tracer gas leak detection system LOKtrace at the international trade fair for refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pumps, CHILLVENTA, from 13.-15.10.2010 in Nuremberg.
One of the biggest challenges during the installation and service on refrigeration and air-conditionings systems is the safe tracing of leaks. There have been numerous methods available for this for years, but all of them have considerable disadvantages. Small leaks are only traced unreliably or not at all, leak detection can only be carried out with the air-conditioning systems filled, and sometimes conventional leak detection systems react to external gases.
For this reason, VULKAN Lokring developed the tracer gas leak detection system LOKtrace which combines all the advantages of existing leak detection methods - without the disadvantages of the conventional methods mentioned.
Trace gas leak detection has been used successfully for years in industry to check the air-tightness of refrigeration equipment and air-conditioning systems. During leak detection with the LOKtracer, LOKtrace gas is used, a gas mixture made up of 95% nitrogen and 5% hydrogen. The hydrogen share is used as the tracer gas. LOKtrace gas is non-toxic, not harmful to the environment and not inflammable (ISO 10156).
The LOKtrace gas is filled into the empty system at a pressure of between 5 and 7 bar. Leaks can be localised with the aid of the hydrogen leak detector LOKtracer TLD.500 or TLD.1000. The LOKtracers react exclusively to hydrogen, which means there are no cross-sensitivities. Which in its turn means leak detection is extremely reliable. Hydrogen molecules are the smallest naturally occurring particles and escape from even the tiniest of leaks (less than 1 g/year). This means the LOKtracer can also be used to trace very small leaks. Since hydrogen is lighter than air, the hydrogen molecules rise and the pipes can easily be checked from above. Experience with leak detection in food markets has even shown that the tracer gas diffuses through screed and other construction materials very quickly. This means even such leaks that can otherwise only be found after major building work or not at all due to the inaccessibility of the pipework can now be localised quickly.
Since 01.12.2006, the Chemical Protection Directive has stipulated that all stationary systems with a filling quantity greater than 3 kg must be subjected to a leak test at least every 12 months, with testing to be recorded in a log book. If operators do not meet this requirement, fines of up to € 50,000 per infringement could be due for offences according to § 26 Para. 1 No. 11 of the Chemicals Law. LOKtracer guarantees companies reliable and cheap leak detection, so that they no longer have to risk an infringement of the directive.
You can see the advantages of the LOKtracer for yourself at the Lokring booth (Hall 2 - Booth 217) at the CHILLVENTA 2010 in Nuremberg.
RAC COOLING INDUSTRY AWARD 2010:
LOKRING nominated in the category "Refrigeration technology product of the year"
The LOKRING tube connection has been nominated for the RAC COOLING INDUSTRY AWARD 2010. Alongside five other products from well-known manufacturers, VULKAN Lokring's solderless tube connection is one of the finalists in the category "Refrigeration technology product of the year".
These days, refrigeration and air-conditioning technology is facing major ecological challenges. As a technology with high energy consumption - 20% of national consumption - the branch is coming under increasing pressure to increase the energy efficiency of the systems used, improve the CO2 balance and provide innovative answers to other environment-related questions such as noise, refrigerant consumption and the recycling ability of materials. The RAC COOLING INDUSTRY AWARD highlights products, technologies and concepts that can make a decisive contribution to the handling of these environmental problems.
The patented LOKRING tube connection is not only a reliable and economical method of connecting refrigerant lines, it is environmentally friendly too. Thanks to its permanent hermetic air-tightness, the solderless connection prevents refrigerant loss in systems and thus helps to significantly reduce the emission of climate-killing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The average high leak rates in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems using conventional solder connections not only lead to high refrigerant consumption, but also to increased energy consumption. The principle "LOKRINGing rather than soldering" thus makes a decisive contribution to improving energy efficiency and the greenhouse gas balance of cooling systems.
In many branches that use refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, the trend is clearly moving towards CO2 as a climate-neutral refrigerant. As a natural refrigerant, carbon dioxide is friendlier to the environment than the refrigerants containing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) widespread today. These synthetic refrigerants do not have any ozone depletion potential like the chlorofluorocarbons banned by the Montreal Protocol 20 years ago, but they do have more than a thousand times the global warming potential of CO2. VULKAN Lokring has recognised the increasing importance of the refrigerant CO2. Last year, the company developed a tube connection system for a special application for one of the largest supermarket chains in the world that can be used for the demanding requirements of sub-critical CO2 cooling systems. All the new supermarkets built by the chain are now being installed solderless with CO2 refrigerant systems, with old markets are gradually being retrofitted. This solderless tube connection has many advantages. Since no soldering is carried out, no fire protection measures are necessary, the tube connection is clean because no fluxing agent is required, the use of thin-walled tubes means material can be saved, installation is straightforward and can be carried out by non-skilled workers, saving time and working costs, and installation is possible during business hours.
The RAC COOLING INDUSTRY AWARD 2010 will be presented by the jury of the renowned Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Magazine in London on September 29, 2010.
CHILLVENTA 2010:

Embraco confirms its leadership in the high-efficiency segment with the VNEK compressor
World leader in hermetic compressors for refrigeration, Embraco is a reference in the high-energy efficiency segment. The Embraco VCC technology, of variable capacity, meets the most restrictive laws regarding energy consumption and, from October 13-15 in Nuremberg, Germany, it will be possible to confirm why Embraco is the leader in this segment. One of the highlights will be the VNEK, the Embraco's first high efficiency product for commercial refrigeration compatible with natural fluids. The product will be exhibited in Chillventa 2010, the most important European trade fair for refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation and heat pumps.
The VNEK also differs by its wider range of applications in relation to current variable capacity products, due to its 12cc pump. If compared to the NEK, in its ON-OFF technology version, efficiency gains are up to 25%. Among the products that use conventional ON-OFF technology, Embraco will present the NTU compressor, 20% more efficient than the NT. The NTU offers applications ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 BTUs ARI.
"Chillventa is a meeting point and a moment to get in contact with realities of the sector and the latest available developments", states of Vice President of Business and Marketing, Roberto Campos. The executive underlines that Chillventa is the sector's most important international get-together and represents an opportunity to meet Extra EU operators: several visitors come from Russia and ex URSS countries, as well as from ME and Asia Pacific.
Perspectives
As a global, high technology, innovative and sustainable company, Embraco strongly believes in natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons in order to maintain its leadership in high efficiency products. Roberto Campos explains that high efficiency is clearly important for commercial refrigeration and HCs can contribute to increase the efficiency of the cabinets. According to him, there is a tendency to use HCs for larger cooling capacity, while still maintaining the refrigerant charge below 150g. "OEMs and end users are examining the Embraco VCC opportunity to further reduce energy consumption in commercial refrigeration applications".
Embraco is very enthusiastic about hydrocarbon fluids for commercial refrigeration. "We believe we are facing a very interesting growth opportunity for propane applications", Campos says. With practically zero ODP and very low GWP, hydrocarbon fluids for commercial refrigeration have emerged as a very attractive solution. "Propane is the most interesting refrigerant for both low evaporating temperature ranges as well as positive temperature evaporation in commercial appliances", he adds.
For him, there is a great interest for natural refrigerants even if the European community doesn't have a regulation banning the use of HFCs. It is because large end-users are very careful regarding sustainability and also natural refrigerants.
Europe is an important market for Embraco and the company has been achieving good results in the region. "We think we will achieve very good results in 2010", Roberto Campos states.

Areas of No Reception Become Thing of the Past
Wireless Temperature Sensors - Available Now With External ProbesECKELMANN AG from Wiesbaden, Germany, has extended its wireless temperature monitoring system. Newly added is a model equipped with an external temperature probe. With it, the TS 30 XW can be positioned even more flexibly than the TS 30 W, and is now capable of transmitting even from "areas of no reception". The measured data are sent to the transmitter via a 3m cable.
"In actual practice, cold stores adjacent to the sales floor need to be included in the monitoring", explains Dr Frank Uhlemann, Head of the Refrigeration and Building Management Systems Division at ECKELMANN. "If the cold stores are protected by metallised films, it is almost impossible to set up a secure wireless connection. The TS 30 XW with external probe is the ideal solution - not only in these cases, but also where specific strap-on sensors are needed."
Measuring Temperatures Where It Matters
The TS 30 W can be mounted directly inside the compartments of refrigerated cabinets or freezer islands. Thus, the actual temperatures can be easily measured in the immediate vicinity of the products. With a temperature range of -40 to +80°C, the sensor covers a broad range of measurement tasks. Temperature data are reliably transmitted to a maintenance-free receiver module which is designed to record data from up to 100 sensors. Due to innovative low-energy technology, the sensor has a self-sufficiency of 10 years.
No Energy Efficiency without Measuring
Digital temperature measurement technology is ten times more precise than conventional air stream measurements. Knowing the actual temperature is indispensable for a more efficient control of the refrigeration point and for a comprehensive quality management (HACCP). By using the data thus recorded, there will be no more unnecessary safety margins: with normal temperatures, increasing the evaporating temperature by 1 K can save up to 6 percent of energy costs (reduction of heat loss power at a supply air temperature of 4°C and an ambient temperature of 20°C).
New Fields of Application
Since it was introduced in 2009, the wireless transmission system has been proven many times over in food retailing. As becomes clear from first applications in the temperature monitoring of medication store rooms and the measurement of concrete core temperatures, however, the wireless sensors can be used in other areas, too. Important insights can be derived from the data, e.g. for concrete core activation, a young technology used for the cost-efficient refrigeration and heating of buildings.
Due to the permanent MAC address, RFID applications can also be realised in mobile automation and intralogistics.

At the Chillventa 2010, ECKELMANN presents its new products E•COP+, E•ThermalGrid, E•BenchMark and E•SmartHACCP for the first time. The new E•LDS suite combines innovative functions used in optimising cycle processes and incorporating renewable energies as well as in building control and in energy and quality management.
At the Chillventa 2010, ECKELMANN AG presents its ‘E•LDS suite' for the first time. Under the names of E•COP+, E•ThermalGrid, E•BenchMark and E•SmartHACCP, we present new and improved functions of the control and monitoring system in a succinct and user-oriented way. The company from Wiesbaden, Germany, manufactures one of the most technologically advanced ICA systems for refrigeration plants and integrated building management systems.
E•COP+ - Optimal Control of Cycle Processes
E•COP+ comprises all system components from case and pack controllers up to and including PC and web applications used in the monitoring of plants. Some of the major functions include forward-looking control strategies as well as continuous enthalpy control and optimisation of suction pressure (for TEV und EEV), and they guarantee the efficient compression, condensation and relaxation of the refrigerant.
Due to pollution, the condenser needs to be cleaned at regular intervals, or else the COP significantly deteriorates. The automatic condenser monitoring under E•COP+ supports operators in the timely planning of such maintenance works and thus ensures that the continued efficient operation of the refrigeration plant.
COP live monitoring permanently provides energy management with reliable data of the current efficiency. On the basis of these data, plants can be monitored and optimised in a far more targeted manner.
Control technology has a significant impact on the COP and/or the performance of a refrigeration plant. E•COP+ comprises all of ECKELMANN's competencies and the company's long years of experience in the control of Carnot processes, both with regard to refrigeration plants and heat pumps.
E•ThermalGrid - Networking Energy Consumers and Heat Flows
The incorporation of refrigeration technology into comprehensive building management systems has enormous potential for increasing energy efficiency. Networking heat flows and energy consumers in an integrated and intelligent way opens up valuable synergies, standardises operation and creates a fully transparent energy management.
With E•ThermalGrid, ECKELMANN pursues an integral concept that offers functions and flexible components for a building control across systems boundaries - similarly as with the two proprietary, freely programmable controllers (DDC): ENC 55 and the GLT 3010 compact controller.
Virtually, E•ThermalGrid can be used for all kinds of systems, e.g. for refrigeration, lighting, heating, ventilation, sanitary installations, photovoltaics, etc. One of its strengths is that it incorporates waste heat recovery, heat pumps and geothermal energy into the refrigeration plant by means of a simple control technological operation. With regard to integrated waste heat recovery, there is a double advantage in this. The refrigeration plant can be tapped as a cheap heat source and, at the same time, the efficiency of the refrigeration machine is improved. E•ThermalGrid consistently networks all systems with each other, thus realising a comprehensive time and energy management.
E•BenchMark - Evaluation and Optimisation of Plants
Featuring a number of intuitive analysis tools for the energetic and microeconomic evaluation of refrigeration plants and building management systems, E•BenchMark rather belongs in the world of merchants and energy managers.
LDSWin and LDSWeb are modern PC and web applications that automate the benchmarking and ranking on the basis of all energy, consumption and temperature data. The full transparency of energy management is ensured by standardised comparisons.
Measures for increasing energy efficiency are capable of being evaluated by using valid data. E•BenchMark can be used across locations in remote maintenance centres for a virtually infinite number of plants.
E•SmartHACCP - The Clever Way of Ensuring Quality
HACCP-compliant temperature documentation and quality management are central themes in food retailing. E•SmartHACCP relieves staff of time-consuming routine measurements. Temperatures are recorded completely and automatically - immediately via a radio sensor placed in the goods space of the refrigerated cabinets and/or via the temperature sensors of the case controllers and temperature data loggers.
Clearly arranged 24-hour temperature lists are either accessible via PC and web or will be sent via email to the store manager's mailbox. E•SmartHACCP can be used to ensure the quality management across locations in an infinite number of stores.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Through the use of pulse width modulation, the valve is cycled on and off to achieve a desired flow. During a cycle, the valve can be open anywhere from 0 to 6 seconds. The more "on" time required, the greater the fl ow through the valve. The correct amount of "on" time can be determined by monitoring superheat (see HPT Pressure/Temperature Transducer Bulletin PT100). If actual superheat is greater than desired, the pulse width signal is increased to provide more valve "on" time. If actual superheat is less than desired, pulse width signal is decreased to reduce valve "on" time. The same principal applies to level control where a 4-20mA signal from a VLT level sensor controls the level in a vessel.

Digital manifold testo 550 for tough applications on refrigeration systems and heat pumps
testo 550 saves time in service, maintenance and commissioning
Especially in the fields of service and maintenance, but also when commissioning systems, time is of the essence, and expensive. In the future, the new digital manifold from the measurement technology specialist Testo AG will allow time-saving measurements and is a low-budget alternative to the previously used analog manifolds.
testo 550 measures high and low pressure quickly and precisely, and simultaneously calculates the temperatures. The brightly illuminated display allows fast and easy readout of all measurement values. There are 30 refrigerants stored in the instrument, which can be easily selected via a direct button.
Two temperature inputs allow the simultaneous calculation and display of superheating and subcooling. A clamp probe for fast and easy temperature measurements on pipes is included in delivery.
Reliable commissioning
The electronic manifold testo 550 informs the user of the vacuum reached when evacuating a system. In addition to this, a temperature-compensated tightness test of the system can be carried out using the measuring instrument. By measuring the system pressure and the ambient temperature over a defined period, the users can make a statement on the tightness of a system - allowing commissioning to be carried out reliably with the testo 550.

AREA had a successful participation in Chillventa 2010 on 13-15 October in Nuremberg.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, AREA President Graeme Fox mentioned the high number of exhibitors (around 900) despite difficult economic times and considered it as "a testament not only to our industry's dedication to displaying new technologies and methods to the wider world as widely as possible, but also to the industry's faith in the Chillventa brand to highlight and showcase all that is great and good in the world of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps".
Also speaking at the Opening Ceremony, BIV President and AREA Director Frank Heuberger described Chillventa as a concrete example of the daily cooperation between manufacturers, retailers and craftsmen first sellers and installers of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment.
AREA participation in Chillventa saw many visitors dropping by the stand shared with BIV. Moreover, Mr. Fox spoke at the Refrigeration Forum where he presented the latest developments of the position on the ongoing review of the EU F-Gas Regulation.
AREA has issued a press release to stress its pride of being honorary sponsor of Chillventa.
AREA Task Forces met on 8th October 2010 at the occasion of the autumn General Assembly meeting in Brussels.
TF F-Gas Review, chaired by Mr. Fox, adopted some amendments to the AREA general position on F-Gas Review. These changes (detailed further) relate to pre-charged non-monobloc a/c equipment, the 3kg refrigerant threshold and the list of issues for which clarifications should be provided. These amendments were later endorsed by AREA members unanimously.
TF Energy Efficiency, chaired by Mr. Gleed (RACG, UK), has presented its background paper on the contribution of the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps contracting sector in the field of energy efficiency. The paper is now the process of adoption.
TF Low GWP Refrigerants and TF CO2 decided to merge in order to work on low GWP refrigerants in general (i.e. CO2, HCs, ammonia and HFOs). Prof. Schreurs took this opportunity to present his latest 2 activities in the field of training for installation of CO2 equipment in Belgium (for more information, please contact AREA Secretariat).
TF Heat Pumps, chaired by Per Jonasson (KYL, Sweden), started working on a draft document on qualification schemes for installers of heat pumps. The work will base itself on what has been or is being developed (e.g. EHPA EUCERT, QualiCert) and complement it with other requirements (F-Gas, PED...)
AREA published its general position on the F-Gas Review on 13th July 2010. At its last meeting on 8th October, the Task Force F-gas Review adapted this position on 3 points in order to reflect on certain comments and internal discussions.
First, AREA decided to call for a ban on pre-charging of fluorinated gases in non-monobloc air conditioning equipment. The aim is to ensure installation of this equipment by certified professionals, a legal requirement under the current F-Gas Regulation though hardly applied in practice. Whereas AREA originally requested to align the regime for fluorinated gases in such equipment with that of fluorinated gases in containers, it was felt that the solution should be adapted in order not to limit distribution channels. Banning pre-charging would guarantee installation by certified professionals, solely allowed to take delivery of fluorinated gases. In addition, reporting (currently lacking for this kind of equipment) would be done under the responsibility of contractors. Control on imports would be easy. Finally, it is a cost-neutral option, whether for public authorities (who would actually save control costs compared to the current situation) or users (charging the refrigerant only takes a few seconds). A detailed position on this specific point has just been adopted.
Second, the 3kg refrigerant threshold was re-discussed. Set a few years ago, this threshold is not adapted to the technological innovations that have occurred in the past few years and which make it possible to use less refrigerant charge for the same level of performance. AREA originally requested to set a new threshold at 1kg or less. Following further internal discussions, it was decided to go for 100g in order to include all relevant equipment whilst keeping the exclusion of domestic refrigeration or portable refrigeration devices for practical reasons.
Finally AREA has set a list of issues which require clarific
aktion or guidance in order to ensure uniform implementation and application across the EU. This list, which was drawn up in the framework of AREA reply to the Öko-Recherche questionnaire, has been turned into an annex to AREA general position.
AREA President, Mr. Fox, had the opportunity to introduce these latest developments at the occasion of the F-Gas Expert Group meeting on 11th October 2010, during which Öko-Recherche presented its preliminary report. In general AREA welcomes the report, which provides a relatively accurate overview of the implementation of the F-Gas Regulation. A number of figures and methodologies however need further explanations. AREA also feels that international aspects are given a somewhat disproportionate consideration in view of the state of international negotiations. Proposals from Öko-Recherche are now awaited, since the report limits itself to an assessment of the situation. 3 „h The 3rd edition of the International Special Issue has just been published under the responsibility of Marco Buoni (ATF/Centro di Studi Galileo - in cooperation with the IIR, UNEP and the European Energy Centre) on the general theme: "cooling without warming - green new deal in refrigeration and air conditioning". Many prominent public and private stakeholders and experts contributed to the issue, including AREA. Mr. Fox thus wrote a large article on the theme "Contractors: guiding you towards energy efficient refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems".
Hard copies of the magazine will be distributed in upcoming events of the International Institute of Refrigeration, as well as UNEP summits on Montreal protocol in Bangkok and Kyoto protocol in Cancun both in November.
„h Guidelines for the safe use of hydrocarbons refrigerants were recently published. The document mentions the AREA Refrigeration Craftsman's project, which provides a set of competences for professionals
AREA has put together a brochure that provides a concise overview of the association, its objectives, structure, activities and members. The brochure was first displayed on AREA stand at Chillventa exhibition. It is now available for free download on the homepage of AREA website:

Take off for electromagnetic centrifugal compressor!
At Chillventa 2010 in Nuremberg, Germany Kältetechnik aircool GmbH was the first company in Europe to present "live" and in operation, the magnetically levitated turbo compressor McQuay "Magnitude".
Munich, October 2010. McQuay, the pioneer and market leader in turbo technology, has established now also in Europe a new standard in the 1400-2000 KW cooling power class with the "Magnitude" WME series. Kältetechnik aircool visitors had the opportunity to convince themselves of that at the "Chillventa" trade fair in Nuremberg. On the fair stand of the long standing McQuay partner, based in Munich, a machine of the "Magnitude" WME series was started for the first time in Europe, under the auspices and lively interest of the trade visitors. Hardly a Chillventa visitor wanted to miss the highlight of the show and experience the innovative WME liquid chiller in "live" demo operation. The rush to the aircool booth was accordingly large: "Many people came to us to personally get an impression of the latest-generation turbo compressor and its performance in practice" according to aircool-founder and managing director Bruno Trost.
The latest McQuay chillers are measurably more efficient, quieter and more durable than comparable products from competitors. The "Magnitude" turbo compressors achieve extremely low fuel consumption due to the electromagnetic, oil-free bearing of the rotating parts, and variable, digitally controlled speeds. This pays off twice: The "Magnitude" compressor always runs at the optimum speed required for cooling, in part-and full-load, thereby reducing the operating costs.
The additional advantages of contactless magnetic technology from McQuay are a steady constant power output with high operational reliability, low maintenance costs, minimal vibration, and significantly reduced noise emissions.
Magnitude WME by McQuay: Magnet technology meets proven characteristics
"Magnitude" machines share all the proven features with the successful and well established previous McQuay WMC series: The hermetically sealed direct drive, easy-MicroTech controls with a touch screen panel and the flexible integration possibilities to interface with existing systems. The environmentally friendly refrigerant R134a also ensures sustainable investment security because its use is assured in the future.
As was the case on the Chillventa 2008, aircool CEO Mr. Trost was exclusively charged with all planning and execution for the McQuay-booth as he indicated. Mr. Trost draws a positive resume of the trade fair: "aircool has again demonstrated its extensive know-how as an authorized, experienced McQuay contractual partner. As the first McQuay dealership in Europe, we have successfully put a machine of the new "Magnitude" WME series into operation at the Nuremberg fair for the refrigeration industry."
The Munich-based Kältetechnik aircool GmbH has been specializing in sales, consulting, installation, adjustment and maintenance of the sophisticated and highly efficient McQuay units in all industries for almost 25 years.

Managing Director
25 years of refrigeration - a company history - Kältetechnik aircool GmbH:
Becoming the market-leader with refrigeration know-how and expertise
A quarter century of history in time-lapse: How Kältetechnik aircool GmbH has grown with the McQuay technological innovations. Why the Munich-based company now is among the top suppliers in the German market with its wide performance range of industrial refrigeration solutions.
Munich, in April 2011, 25 years Kältetechnik aircool GmbH are also 25 years of accumulated know-how with leading refrigeration technology and innovative products from McQuay, the market leader. Success does not come by chance: Bruno Trost believed in McQuay technology from the beginning, even before the founding of his company he recognized the potential. So his company grew since 1986 , located at the site of the former Westinghouse branch office, together with the technical innovations of McQuay. aircool always played a decisive role in their market introduction and propagation: As in the case of chillers introduced in 1991 with the security refrigerant R134a, which for the first time achieved the ODP-factor 0 in high-efficiency machines combined with environmental protection. The in-house / special plant manufacturing was always an important aspect for aircool: One year later, aircool developed standardized air-cooled chillers with ammonia and dry expansion.
Innovation, accompanied and developed by aircool
Business picked up quickly during the first full decade for the company, based in the north of Munich: 1994 following this in-house development an additional variation "free cooling" was developed. 1996 a celebration, a total of 1,000 units in all performance categories were sold. 1997 aircool presents in-house developed software for refrigeration equipment with a remote monitoring option. Two years later, the most environmentally friendly high-performance refrigerant R410a is used for the first time in industrial liquid chillers -- aircool is again one of the first companies to sell and maintain these machines in the German market. This benefits not only our customers - knowledge of the advanced technical features of McQuay equipment is growing at aircool, step by step.
Our continued business growth has allowed us to expand and move to the commercial complex at the new Munich Trade Fair area in 2001. The issue of energy efficiency has been resolved in an exemplary manner: Heating and air conditioning is assisted by using the clay below the building foundation for latent storage by way of 4,800 meters of PE pipes. At the new headquarters there is also plenty of room for our subsidiary acr chiller rent GmbH, founded in 2004 ; the additional business segment for rental cooling and accessories is in this way independent.
In the following years, the innovations at aircool and McQuay have been truly in the fast lane: In 2005, as McQuay's first European representative, aircool upgraded a turbo chiller to the new Microtec II controller. Further McQuay premieres at aircool are the turbo chillers with variable frequency drive presented in 2006, and in the following year aircool received the WMC-certification, the license for operation, repair and maintenance of this series with a magnetic bearing Turbocor-compressor. The reference installation of this new technology was realized in 2009, when aircool, as the first McQuay partner in Europe, installed a WMC chiller in the Space Center IABG in Munich.
At the Nuremberg "Chillventa" in the fall of last year, the aircool / McQuay stand became a stage for one more European model launch, as one of the first newly developed WME-Turbos from McQuay impressed the experts under real practical operating conditions.
aircool obtained the official certification for these chillers equipped with "Magnitude" compressors in 2011.
Highly competent sales and technical expertise
In the two and a half decades since its founding a strong sales and service structure was developed. aircool customers are in the hands of specialists from their first contact through to installation, commissioning and after-sales service. The aircool range of products includes chillers, industrial coolers, special construction, low-temperature applications, heat pumps, air conditioners and equipment, dehumidifiers as well as compressors and spare parts. The portfolio spans the range from 5 to 9485 KW cooling capacity per unit, in a range of temperatures from minus 64 to plus 70 degrees Celsius.
For every success story there are reasons. The path to market leadership in the German refrigeration industry was by way of organically grown know-how and a focus on the best products available in the market. The many years of partnership with McQuay not only increased the confidence in this long-term relationship; a deep-rooted expertise for the technical characteristics of these innovative products has evolved.
Figure 1): 25 years is a big enough reason to celebrate: Bruno & Christoph Trost extend an invitation to a gala dinner in "The Charles Hotel" a grand hotel in Munich.
Figure 2): aircool in its 25-year history was always the first with McQuay-innovations. Most recently in October 2010, where the latest addition to the WME "Magnitude" series was presented in live operation at the aircool / McQuay stand on the "Chillventa" in Nuremberg.

April 2011: Self-zeroing differential pressure transmitters 984A and 985A
In many cases, no reliable conclusion on the condition of a system can be drawn from an existing pressure, neither in building automation, air conditioning and clean-room technology, in valve control nor in fan and blower monitoring. For this purpose, a differential pressure transmitter is the preferred sensor, for it allows some statements on the differential pressure as well as on the over- and underpressure in a system.
However, present differential pressure transmitters show one disadvantage: The zero point always needs to be reset manually again and again in order to compensate the drift caused by ageing, temperature, or by system-related influences. The new sensors of the 984A and 985A series are now self-zeroing. Thus, the sensor can do without maintenance at regular intervals - an advantage that is not inconsiderable - as the removal of false ceilings or contamination caused by the maintenance technician will be avoided. Particularly for systems that require utmost hygienic or clean-room conditions or even high security in connection with access limitations, this is a decisive advantage in terms of operating costs.
The new differential pressure transmitter is available in two different designs, the 984A with a round (85 x 58 mm in diameter) or the 985A with a rectangular IP65 enclosure (81 x 83 x 60 mm). Both models use a small valve for zeroing or offset compensation done automatically at regular intervals. Their operating voltage is 24 VAC/VDC. Their three-wire output signal can be configured either for 0...10 V or for 4...20 mA (20...500 Ohm burden) with the aid of a jumper. The maximum current consumption of the LED display model is below 150 mA, while the one without display even draws less than 60 mA. These sensors are suitable for use in air or non-aggressive gases. They can be switched over between two different pressure ranges. Depending on the respective model, the measuring range is between 0...25 Pa and 0...250 kPa. By means of jumpers, one can also set the response time on site, for example, to suppress the display of short pressure surges. Also with the aid of a jumper, the user can choose between a linear or a square-rooted signal. The latter is useful for measuring volume flows. The round sensor enclosures meet the requirements of protection category IP 54, while the rectangular ones are even in conformity with IP 65.
Armaflex Cryogenic Systems: Low-temperature insulation systems for industrial process pipework and tanks
Highly flexible cryogenic foams require neither additional vapour barriers nor expansion joints
Münster, 13 April 2011. - The storage and transportation of cryogenic media such as LNG, methanol or ethylene demand high-performance insulation materials. With Armaflex Cryogenic Systems Armacell is now the first supplier to present flexible insulation products which have been specially developed for low-temperature applications. The multi-layered systems ensure exceptional thermal insulation, reduce the risk of corrosion under insulation (CUI) and allow considerable cost savings during the installation process. The insulation systems are ‘patent pending'.
Flexible at cryogenic temperatures
Armaflex Cryogenic Systems provide in a single material the key performance qualities required for insulation materials in low-temperature environments. These could previously only be achieved through a combination of several different materials (for example rigid foams with separate vapour retarders and contraction joints). The new cryogenic foams have low thermal conductivity and retain their flexibility even at low temperatures. Due to this flexibility, vibrations and impact are absorbed and the risk of cracking as a result of extreme temperature cycles or external mechanical strain is reduced dramatically. An important advantage of Armaflex Cryogenic Systems is the fact that they need neither additional expansion joints nor vapour barriers.
Built-in expansion joint
Because of the low-temperature flexibility of the material, the system itself acts as a contraction and expansion joint. Thus the pipe is protected against thermal stress and crack formation. Traditional systems made of rigid foam utilise glass wool or mineral fibre as a buffer against contraction and expansion. This not only increases the installation costs; due to the open-cell material structure of the expansion joints, the risk of moisture infiltrating the system and compromising the insulation effect rises.
Built-in vapour barrier
Moreover, Armaflex Cryogenic Systems do not need additional vapour barriers. Armaflex is a closed-cell material with a high resistance to water vapour transmission and as such has a ‘built-in' vapour barrier. Unlike traditional systems where each insulation layer must be protected against moisture infiltration by a separate vapour barrier, in the case of Armaflex the resistance to water vapour transmission is built up throughout the entire thickness of the insulation. This not only increases the reliability of the insulation system, but also reduces the installation costs significantly as there is no need for the time-consuming process of installing vapour barriers with sealants and special adhesive tapes.
Field of application
Armaflex Cryogenic Systems can be used in the temperature range of -200 °C to
+125 °C. The inner system layer made of Armaflex LTD is a specially developed diene terpolymer which prevents thermal stress. The outer layers consist of Armaflex, the world's leading flexible insulation material. With its closed-microcell structure, low thermal conductivity and high resistance to water vapour transmission this material provides installations with long-term protection against moisture infiltration and energy losses. The metal cladding ensures high resistance to mechanical impact. At application temperatures below -110 °C the system is completed by the Armaflex LTD anti-abrasive foil, which provides the inner insulation layer with added surface strength. If noise control is also required on the cryogenic pipework, the combined use of Armacell's acoustic insulation materials ArmaSound Industrial Systems is recommended. The systems are coordinated with each other and meet the thermal-acoustic requirements with significantly reduced insulation thickness and weight compared to traditional insulation systems.
Due to their high flexibility, Armaflex Cryogenic Systems are much easier and quicker to install than rigid materials and a good fit can be achieved even on awkwardly shaped installations.
Armacell is a manufacturer of engineered foams and the world leader in the market for flexible technical insulation materials. In the financial year 2010, the company had an annual turnover of around 427 million euros. The group of companies has approximately 2,500 employees and 18 factories in 12 countries. It is headquartered in Münster, Germany. Apart from ARMAFLEX, the leading brand in the field of flexible technical insulation, the company also produces thermoplastic insulation materials, covering systems, fire protection and noise control products, special foams for a multitude of industrial applications and foam cores which are used as composite materials. www.armacell.com/IMPSHydrobox with EHPA seal of approval
Frankfurt a. M. / Ratingen, 15 March 2011 - The Hydrobox for heat pump split systems from Mitsubishi Electric has now been certified in accordance with the requirements of the EHPA heat pump seal of approval and thus satisfies the criteria for subsidy by the German Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). This offers users a heat pump which is completely certified in accordance with the provisions of the BAFA and eligible for subsidy. "As we distribute our heat pumps and the Hydrobox in a large number of European countries from our base here in Germany, we have also filed applications for the relevant European certifications and are currently awaiting the corresponding approvals", explained Michael Lechte, Marketing Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, Living Environment Systems. This includes the eco-design label amongst others. "In the future, these distinctions will be decisive in the harmonising of the European market and in Germany", continued Lechte. However, while current German provisions place the focus heavily on energy efficiency, the European Ecolabel also includes criteria such as environmental sustainability, quality attributes and product life spans amongst others.
The Hydrobox from the company based in Ratingen, Germany, was unveiled at the end of last year. As the indoor unit of a split heat pump system, it includes all the necessary components for a speedy installation such as the complete hydraulics, an SPS-based heat pump manager and a highly efficient circulating pump. The free controllability of the delta-T with a flow and return sensor upstream of the plate heat exchanger allows the achievement of the best possible efficiency even at partial load. In order to be able to realize the required constant and high volume flow during the defrosting phase, the high-efficiency pump is provided with the approval for full pump capacity. The device has compact dimensions of 600 x 400 x 1000 mm and weighs 50 kg. The integrate 3-way switch-over valve can be used for the immersion heater override circuit.
In addition, the Hydrobox can be used to connect up existing, conventional, fossil fuel-based heat generators and solar systems with an air-to-water heat pump to a hybrid complete system.
"Our partners in the specialist crafts sector were confronted time and time again with the demand that end customers renovating their heating system want to keep on using the existing system with fossil fuels as a peak load boiler for emergencies", says Lechte explaining the device concept. "With our Hydrobox it is possible to compile a personalised water supply system based on our heat pumps, which flexibly uses both existing components and offers the possibility of subsequently mounting further products such as solar collectors."
A clear, large format touchscreen display with plain text messages allows you to check the efficiency of the heat pump system, among other things, at all times. The regulation also contains all conventional special functions such as floor heating, party and holiday programmes. In addition, the regulation of up to two heating circuits guarantees the simple creation of the heating system, for example for specifying the compressor capacity for the preparation of hot water. To achieve a personalised, optimal efficiency of the air-to-water heat pump, two different heating curves can be set for day and night operation via the touchscreen display.

High demand for hygiene-certified Lossnay ventilation system
Frankfurt a. M. / Ratingen, 15 March 2011 - Mitsubishi Electric reported an increased demand for its new, VDI 6022-certified Lossnay ventilation system at the ISH 2011 in Frankfurt. "Thanks to a number of large projects, we have now already exceeded our annual planned figures for the Lossnay ventilation system by a considerable margin", said Holger Thiesen, General Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, Living Environment Systems. "We now intend to expand our production capacity quickly in order to be able to supply the demand." At Chillventa 2010, Mitsubishi unveiled the first Lossnay ventilation system with heat and moisture recovery available on the market, which is certified in accordance with the VDI 6022 hygiene standard. The cross flow heat exchanger integrated in the ventilation system was classified as being hygienically insignificant.
The product was developed specially based on the requirements of the German market. "Our VFR air conditioning units were often selected in tenders, but the legally prescribed and necessary ventilation in for example shops and office buildings had to be supplied with competitive products as a hygiene certificate according to VDI 6022 was required. "This situation was unsatisfactory for both our partners in planning and realisation and the company itself. Particularly in a system with a common control and regulation system, a complete system composed of air conditioning units for the heating and cooling in combination with the Lossnay ventilation unit can utilise its advantages."
The Lossnay ventilation unit is used primarily for supplying the necessary fresh air to air-conditioned rooms. The particular structure and material of the cross-flow heat exchanger made of specially treated cellulose enables both sensible and latent heat to be recovered from the air. This results not only in increased thermal comfort but in reduced energy costs. The possibility of now using the unit in other applications requiring corresponding hygiene standards expands its application spectrum considerably. The heat and moisture recovery rate is up to 81%. This also means that the investment costs for a new air conditioning system can be reduced, since the power requirement of the air conditioning units is minimised thanks to the extremely high heat recovery rate.
The new ventilation system offers air flow capacities of between 890 and 1,000 m³/h and can thus be employed in all the relevant fields of applications such as shops, offices, practices and office environments. The small dimensions of 955 x 1760 x 594 (HWD) allow optimal integration of the product. "We have received particularly possible feedback about the installation as a floor-mounted appliance", explained Thiesen. "Because of the possibilities for hygienically safe maintenance, the current trend is definitely away from flat ventilation systems in false ceilings towards decentralised, structured plant rooms. Our floor-mounted appliance fits the bill perfectly."
Alongside a pre-filter, a high-performance class F7 filter is also used. The connection of an optional CO2 sensor gives you the additional possibility of regulating the required air volume to suit your specific needs. An automatic night-time ventilation function by means of a bypass circuit has also been recently integrated. The ventilation system can also be mounted in an existing building services management system. Alternatively, the control can be performed via a common control element with the air conditioning system.

New Air-conditioning Unit Wins iF Design Award
Frankfurt am Main / Ratingen, Germany, 15 March 2011 - A new premium air-conditioning unit made by Mitsubishi Electric has won the coveted iF Design Award immediately after making its debut on the market. The company made the announcement on the occasion of the ISH 2011 trade fair in Frankfurt. The product was nominated at the same time for a second qualifying round, in which products from widely differing fields are judged with respect to their amalgamation of functionality and aesthetics.
"With our new MSZ-EF, we have successfully combined the best possible efficiency with a compact design and extremely low noise levels", explains Michael Lechte, Marketing Manager for Mitsubishi Electric, Living Environment Systems. "At the same time, our developers were also able to create an aesthetically convincing appearance along the lines of Japanese Zen principles within these technical constraints." The name "Kirigamine Zen" emphasises the holistic approach of this new innovation. Kirigamine is the name of a Japanese plateau that represents undisturbed nature, and Zen is the short form for a school of Buddhism which, from a western point of view, stands for harmony, peace and well-being.
In their justification for making the award, the jury also drew attention to the outstanding combination of energy efficiency and harmonious design, and to the way in which the device blends quietly into its surroundings and exudes a feeling of peace. The simple yet distinctive design, dominated purely by even surfaces and lacking any unnecessary structural elements, was also highlighted.
The requirements of Energy Efficiency Class A are outperformed by more than 30 % for both heating and cooling. This corresponds to the new A+++ standard, to be defined in the forthcoming ErP European Energy Efficiency Directive. The average EER is 4.59 and the COP is 4.57. The noise emission value is 21 db(A). This new wall-mounted unit also boasts compact dimensions, with a width and depth of just 895 mm and 195 mm respectively. With a choice of three colour designs, in glossy black, glossy white or matt silver, it harmonises easily with all high-quality interiors. The power range extends in five power stages from 2.2 to 5.04 kW for cooling and from 3.3 to 5.8 kW for heating.
"With our premium wall-mounted unit we are aiming to address, first and foremost, users and types of application that we have previously been unable to reach", explains Lechte. "For instance, technical equipment used in meeting and conference rooms is often required to meet extremely high standards - not only with regard to technical performance but to aesthetic appeal too. The versatile compatibility of the wall-mounted MSZ-EF unit with all the other indoor devices in our wide-ranging M series makes individual room design possible right down to the details of the air-conditioning equipment, particularly in the case of multi-split systems."
The product is also compatible with Replace Technology. Replace Technology is the name given by the Ratingen-based manufacturer to a patented system that enables old air-conditioning units to be replaced by new units without the need to replace the connecting pipework. The type of refrigerant used in the existing system is also immaterial here. This technology thus provides a cost-effective method of replacing older, inefficient air-conditioning units or of changing over from the types of refrigerant commonly used in the past. The costly and time-consuming installation of new refrigerant pipework can thus be omitted in the modernisation process. Wolf - Pioneer of increased energy efficiency in Russia
Wolf GmbH currently operates in 57 countries around the globe, has a worldwide workforce of around 1,700 employees and recorded a turnover of approximately €300 million in 2010. Russia is one of the most important international future markets for the system specialist for heating, air conditioning, ventilation, solar systems and combined heat and power plants. The company from Mainburg (Bavaria) has therefore continually extended and intensified its already long-standing involvement in the Russian Federation in the last few years. The partnership is based on sustainability: Wolf wants to help Russian politicians, industry and citizens to become more aware of the need for better climate protection and increased energy efficiency. The company also wants to benefit in the long term from the hitherto untapped potential of the Russian market. Wolf is convinced that a modernisation offensive in Russia offers enormous opportunities for international energy efficiency companies - and wants to participate in this case right from the start.
Wolf is closely involved in the Central Russian region of Yaroslawl, which is situated about 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow and more than 2,400 kilometres from Mainburg. There just under two years ago, the company started operating the first CHP plant in the entire region - a plant with electrical and thermal power of 195 kW and 216 kW respectively. The plant was constructed in Mainburg by Wolf and its subsidiary, the CHP specialist Kuntschar+Schlüter from Wolfhagen, based on a Russian diesel motor converted to gas operation. Wolf has also long acted as a cooperation partner for Russian companies in the development, production and assembly of energy conservation systems. For example, the 280 employees at Wolf-Energy-Solution in Safonovo (Smolensk Oblast) produce large boilers up to 58 MW under licence.
A production facility for CHP plants for the Russian market is currently being constructed. These plants contain motors from Jaroslawl Motorenwerke (JMZ) which are being converted to gas operation and are equipped with Wolf regulation and hydraulic technology.
In its involvement in Russia, however, Wolf is by no means just focusing on products and technologies, but is also investing locally in the training and qualification of people. Wolf has therefore started a successful cooperation venture in order to specifically prepare and train specialists for future requirements. Together with the regional government in Yaroslawl and Yaroslawl Technical University, the Bavarian company has founded the "Engineering Centre for Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection" and set itself ambitious goals. With the aid of the research centre, German know-how will be imparted for Russian climate protection and energy conservation targets, the transfer of knowledge of German energy conservation and environmental technology to Russia will be extended and the joint development and use of efficient conservation systems will be increased. Russian installers will also be trained to a limited extent in cooperation with installation companies from Bavaria.
The efforts are paying off: Wolf energy conservation systems are now already successfully installed in many buildings in Russia. For example, Wolf systems create an ideal room climate in the Kremlin in Moscow, in the Olympic village in Sotschi, in Ekaterinburg Hospital or in the Hilton Hotel in Moscow. Both partners already have their sights firmly fixed on another large project: the 2018 World Cup in Russia and in the area of energy-efficient use with refuse disposal and water treatment. Both partners see further potential here for cooperation - and have good reason to do so: Wolf is one of the main worldwide installers of energy conservation systems and air conditioning units in modern football stadiums. Wolf's references in this field include, for example, the Allianz Arena in Munich, the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, the new EM stadium in Warsaw and the new national stadium in Bucharest. One of the ten stadiums for the 2018 World Cup in Russia will be built in Yaroslawl. Wolf is already present their as the ideal stadium specialist.

Stream - State of the art semi-hermetic piston technology
Emerson Climate Technologies has started the production of a family of semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors: Stream. Stream provides the industry with a portfolio of technologies: a range of 4 and 6 cylinder compressors for today's most commonly found HFC refrigerants, a range of Digital semi-hermetic compressors for simple continuous capacity modulation as well as a range designed for CO2 transcritical applications. All models are fitted with CoreSenseTM Diagnostics that provides advanced compressor protection and diagnostics.
AACHEN, GERMANY, January 9, 2012 -Emerson Climate Technologies is starting the new year 2012 with great news: Stream, the new range of semi-hermetic Copeland® brand compressors for commercial and industrial applications, is now released for production. It is the state-of-the-art technology that results from a continuous investment in R&D and is the answer to the challenges in the commercial sector where refrigeration systems are required to be efficient, sustainable, quiet and environmentally responsible.
Efficiency choice whatever the refrigerant
Emerson's engineers combined existing design techniques with new advanced technologies to create a new 4 and 6-cylinder range of 16 models for HFC refrigerants. Eight of them have Digital continuous modulation capabilities. They cover cooling capacities from 33 to 80 kW medium temperature, 11 to 28 kW low temperature with R404A and can be used also with R134a as well as R407A/C while being the most efficient compressors available. Having the choice between several refrigerants for the same compressor without any compromise on performance is an important and unique benefit: this was made possible by the Emerson-owned and patented Discus® valve plate technology. Compared to other semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors, this technology allows 10% better performance with R404A.
Choice between two solutions of capacity modulation
A way to reduce energy consumption and CO2-emissions is capacity modulation. For the first time, contractors or installers can choose between two different modulation technologies: inverter technology or digital modulation. All Stream compressors are released for inverter applications. In addition Stream Digital models provide an alternative means of continuous modulation. Digital modulation is the most simple and precise method of capacity control and helps to contain applied costs associated with modulation. The compressor always runs at constant speed which resolves the challenges related to oil return, mechanical and electrical stress on the system.
Quietest on the market
Stream is one of the quietest reciprocating compressors on the market. Design efforts have led to sound reduction of up to 7dBA compared to previous generation of compressors depending on models and application. Compressor quiet operation is not always sufficient for sound sensitive such as urban application. As a result a new sound shell can be fitted on Stream compressors and provides an additional 15dBA attenuation.
Stream for natural refrigerants
In addition to the HFC models 3 models for R744 (CO2) transcritical applications cover cooling capacities from 20 to 37 kW. This is the ideal solution for medium temperature cascade and booster systems when combined with Emerson's ZO scroll range for CO2 subcritical. These CO2 Stream models are characterized by a design pressure of 135 bar and are released for operation with frequency inverters. Refrigerant flow and heat transfer have been optimized for best performance.
An intelligent compressor
All compressor models of the Stream family feature CoreSenseTM Diagnostics, an electronic module that provides advanced compressor protection and diagnostics benefits for improved system reliability, reduced service costs and increased equipment uptime. With CoreSenseTM technology, service engineers can now diagnose system-related problems faster or even before they occur in order to keep refrigeration systems in optimum condition over their entire lifetime. The diagnostics module stores compressor asset and advanced runtime information. An individual compressor monitoring is possible, too.
